Patrolman McCarty was killed when a truck hit his Patrol car head on near Hudson on Colorado 6 on January 22, 1946. McCarty was returning to Wray from Denver with Leslie Dale Wells, an automobile dealer. Wells died instantly, and McCarty was taken to Colorado General Hospital where he died two days later. An investigation showed the oncoming truck was on the wrong side of the road and weaving when the accident occurred. The truck driver, John McDougal, was charged with manslaughter.
